How we measure

Methodology

Every number on this site is an estimate with a method behind it. Here is the method — so you can judge the figure, and so we can correct it when the corridor changes.

Times are typical, non-peak, door-to-door

Our headline time for each crossing is a realistic door-to-door range for an off-peak trip from Newark Liberty (EWR), including the walk, the transfer and the last mile — not just the in-vehicle leg. Where a crossing also makes sense from downtown Newark, we give a separate "from Newark" figure. Peak traffic, summer weekends and weather can push the upper bound higher; we say so on the crossing page.

Fares are 2026 figures, dated and sourced

We price each crossing from public, checkable sources, refreshed each season:

  • Rail: NJ Transit's published airport-inclusive fare to New York Penn Station, and Amtrak's dynamic Northeast Corridor fares.
  • PATH: the Port Authority's flat fare ($3.25 as of May 2026).
  • Bus: the Newark Airport Express published coach fare.
  • Taxi: the EWR official-line flat-rate bands plus the TLC and airport surcharges.
  • Tolls: the Port Authority's 2026 Lincoln/Holland Tunnel rates (E-ZPass $14.79 off-peak / $16.79 peak; pay-by-plate higher; all-electronic).
  • Congestion charge: the Manhattan Congestion Relief Zone fees for for-hire vehicles, taxis and passenger cars entering below 60th Street.
  • Black car: operators' posted flat EWR→Manhattan transfer pricing, cited as the operator's own published rate.

The map geometry

The lines on our map and schematics trace the real paths — the Turnpike and the Lincoln/Holland tunnels for road, the Northeast Corridor and North River Tunnels for rail, the PATH tubes, and the Hudson ferry lanes — as hand-placed waypoints. They are accurate in shape and sequence, not survey-grade to the metre. The live map is built on USGS National Map topographic tiles.

Corrections

When a fare changes, a service is suspended or we simply get something wrong, we fix it in place and record anything material in the corrections log. If you spot an error, write to the Newark → Manhattan desk — the contact is on the about page.
