PATH Rapid Transit
A flat $3.25 ride to the WTC or 33rd — from the city, not the airport.
PATH is the rail bargain of this corridor — but it is a commuter line, not an airport line, and it begins at Newark Penn Station rather than at EWR. For anyone already in downtown Newark it is unbeatable: a flat $3.25 ride on the Newark–World Trade Center train to Lower Manhattan in about 22½ minutes, stopping at Harrison, Journal Square, Grove Street and Exchange Place on the way. From the airport it only makes sense if you accept one NJ TRANSIT stop into Newark Penn to pick it up first — which is why this is really the city corridor, not the terminal one.
In sequence
Start at Newark Penn Station — from EWR that means one NJ TRANSIT stop in (the AirTrain link does not reach PATH).
For downtown, board the Newark–World Trade Center line: Harrison, Journal Square, Grove Street, Exchange Place, then under the Hudson to the WTC.
For Midtown West, change at Journal Square (or Grove Street) to the Journal Square–33rd Street line, which runs via Hoboken.
Surface at Christopher, 9th, 14th, 23rd or 33rd Street and finish on the subway or on foot.
When it wins
Downtown-Newark travelers, FiDi and lower-West-Side destinations, rock-bottom budgets.
When it bites
This is not an airport-direct route — budget the NJ TRANSIT hop into Newark Penn before the $3.25 fare even starts. For the 33rd Street line you change at Journal Square (or Grove Street) and ride via Hoboken, which adds time off-peak.
The cost, unpacked
A flat $3.25 PATH fare (raised from $3.00 in 2026), good the length of the line. From EWR, add a short NJ TRANSIT hop to Newark Penn first.
